What Are Anabolic Steroids?

Anabolic steroids are synthetic agents closely related to the male sex hormone testosterone which promote body tissue-building processes.

What Is Testosterone?

In its natural state, testosterone does many things within the body such as stimulating the development of sperm, bone, muscle, skin and hair growth, as well as producing some emotional responses.

Why Were Synthetic Anabolic Steroids Developed And What Do They Do?

They were first developed to rebuild and prevent breakdown of body tissues from disease and aging. and have been used medically to treat a few selected medical conditions

Who Uses Anabolic Steroids And Why?

Athletes began trying them a number of years ago. Some competitive and non-competitive athletes who are trying to excel, have used steroids in order to attempt to enhance their athletic performance or their physical development. It is thought that teenage males are using it in epidemic proportions especially if they think this is an easier way to succeed athletically, or if they are preoccupied with body size and image.

There are a number of problems with this, however. They may build muscle mass for increased strength but the strength of tendons and ligaments doesn't increase with muscle strength. There is an increased chance of injury to muscles and ligaments and weakened tendons result in tearing or rupture and there is a longer recovery period following injuries. In addition, the lean muscle mass may be deficient in phosphate and structurally flawed and the increase in muscle size and weight gain is partially due to sodium and water retention. When the body gets too much testosterone it reacts in many ways, resulting in a number of very unpleasant and unhealthy side effects. Equally as serious, while they are being taken, and sometimes long after, they keep the body from producing/releasing its own natural testosterone since the body produces a smaller amount, which is generally the optimal amount.
